Throughout high school years I was always a bigger girl. This made me self conscious about my weight from an early age and I constantly worried what others thought of me. To make it worse, I tried to lose weight using diet pills, appetite suppressants… even acupuncture but I failed every time. I then had a baby and nearly cracked the 100kg mark, this was a major wake up call.

As adulthood crept by and my son was growing up, so did my weight. I was 89kg and a size 18. 90kg on the scales was the number I did not want to reach! I always wanted an easy quick fix when it came to weight loss.

I started out just walking as my exercise. I didn’t really enjoy it but I knew I needed to do it to loose the weight. After a few months of walking I needed to up the intensity of my exercise and I did this by joining a local gym which is where I met Nathan my personal trainer. It was then that I really saw not only the weight fall off but the clothing sizes drop too. There was something about having a professional guide me through the exercises and educate me on how to get the most from my body that I think was the real turning point for me. Since losing weight, I competed in the City2Surf and I ran the entire 14kms! I finished in 93 minutes. I qualify to move into the faster group for this year. Becoming a personal trainer my self was the next natural progression for me! From someone who loathed exercise, I now love it.

I decided I needed additional help with my weight and joined Weight Watchers. For me it really is the best program because you can do and eat what you like! Once I reached my goal weight I then went on to become a leader. Becoming a Leader has been the best fun. I love getting to know members as there are some really great people out there. Sharing my journey helps them see we all go through the same ups and downs. It also helps me to keep on track and keep the weight off!

My top advice
Measure, measure measure!
The best thing I ever did was take my measurements. If I didn’t I would never have known that I have lost a total of 98cm off my body. For the months when the scales were not so kind – the measuring tape may have been!

Be true to yourself
If you really want it make it happen then make YOU a priority. My son spent three or four hours a week in the gym crèche at the beginning of my journey. I did feel guilty at times but realised I needed to do this for me, and now he is benefiting

No excuses
If you lie, you are only lying to yourself.

So come and join Activemums you really won’t be sorry, it is the best thing I ever did, losing weight and finding the real me!
