Many people find that when they decide to start a new healthy eating plan, it can be expensive. Here are a few tips to help you get started with healthy eating without the extra cost:
- Make a list before you go shopping and stick to it – Many people find that when they go shopping they get suckered into buying junk food products that are on offer. Supermarkets are very good at pushing things on you and putting them in the right place. They don’t care if you are eating healthy or not, they just want your money.
- Replace soft drinks with water (skimmed or semi skimmed) – Try to make water a habitual part of your life and only drink fizzy soft drinks as a treat. Also make sure you drink milk on a daily basis as it is a great source of calcium.
- Look for offers on fruit and vegetables and freeze them if need be – If you manage to find on offer on certain fruits and vegetables, possibly a bulk buy, this will help you save money in the long run. Any fruits or vegetables that you will not consume straight away you can freeze to preserve the goodness.
- Use beans as a meat substitute where possible – beans come in a great amount of variety and are a fantastic source of protein. They are a much cheaper option than lean meat.
- Buy tinned tuna in bulk and when on offer – Tinned tuna is another cheap, great source of protein that can be bought and stored for a considerable time period, so keep an eye out for the offers. It is something that goes well in sandwiches, with a jacket potato, in a salad or a pasta dish. A very healthy, versatile food.
- Try and purchase foods with high water content - Many vegetables and fruits are strongly water based and will not only fill you up but they will also help keep you hydrated
